PUBLIC MEETING NOTICE:
Mark your calendar Save historic Stony Point! NYS Department of Transportation to hold public meeting Plans include the demolition of the Malloy's building Date: Tuesday, January 16, 2007 NYSDOT will hold a public information meeting to inform the public about their plans to replace the Farley bridge on 9W. Two of the four proposals by the NYSDOT include demolition of the historic Malloy's building, located on the northeast corner of Route 9W and East Main Street. The purpose of the meeting is describe the project and to get public input on needs and concerns related to it. Meeting is Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2007; 7pm to 9 pm at Farley Middle School, 140 Route 210. The building that many Stony Pointer's fondly refer to as "The Malloy's Building," was originally constructed about 1861 when the town of Stony Point was called "Knight's Corners." The building has been an historic landmark in Stony Point since 1924, when the original "Malloy's the Druggist, which was located across the street, moved into this building. During the 1940's it became, "Malloy's Pharmacy" and a room upstairs served for a time as the Stony Point Town Hall. When the family business was sold in the 1980's the name continued. In the scene above (left) American flags are being removed from the storefront at dusk on Election Day. In the late 1990's, the building's new owner applied to the Stony Point Planning Board for renovations and a "mixed use" of the building with retail businesses downstairs and apartments upstairs. After special approval from New York State for the mixed use, the Planning Board approved the renovations with a condition that wooden clapboard, not vinyl siding, be used on the exterior because of the building's unique historical character and significant location in our town. The builder agreed and was recognized for his work when the building won a Rockland County Executive Historical Preservation Award in 1999 for preserving Rockland history and an adaptive reuse of the building. The Malloy's building is also recognized in our Stony Point Comprehensive Master Plan (1996) as being an historical "Place of Distinction." Now, the NYS Department of Transportation, it appears with the compliance of the Stony Point Town Board, is proposing to demolish the Malloy's building in order to replace the Farley Memorial Bridge. Of the four plans that the DOT has recommended, two include constructing a new bridge to the east of the current bridge, while allowing the current bridge to serve traffic needs, and then demolishing the Malloy's building because of the new bridge will be directly in its path. Two other proposals include constructing the new bridge to the west of the current bridge. SPACE is opposing the demolition of the Malloy's building, an important town landmark in what little "downtown" we have in Stony Point. The building reconstruction was carefully reviewed by the Stony Point Planning Board in the late 1990's and is an important example of our community's effort to preserve Stony Point history. We'd like the NYSDOT and the Town Board to use the same care now to find an alternative solution that will preserve and protect a building that means so much to the residents of Stony Point. We urge all Stony Point residents to attend the PUBLIC HEARING on TUESDAY, JANUARY 16, 2007, from 7pm-9pm at the FARLEY MIDDLE SCHOOL and show your support of preserving and protecting an important part of Stony Point history!
